The Xayaburi Hydropower Project, which began commercial power sales on October 29, 2019, has faced sustained opposition from various stakeholders including international and domestic NGOs, governments, and communities due to potential “ecological disaster” and concerns over transboundary impacts. Fair Finance Thailand, along with other signatory organizations, calls on the six Thai banks financing the project to adopt stringent guidelines, disclose vital environmental data, and refrain from funding any hydropower projects in the Lower Mekong for at least ten years, emphasizing the need for sustainable banking practices.
